In 2010, there were just over 1 million secure Internet websites worldwide. Almost half of those, or 446,992 to be exact, were located in the United States.
But in which country can we find the most secure websites in relation to population? The answer may surprise you.
The country with the highest number of secure websites per person is…
If we look at where in world we can find the highest number of secure Internet websites in relation to the size of the population, we get a very interesting picture. Gibraltar, with a population of around 30,000, tops the list, followed by Bermuda (approx. 65,000 population), and Liechtenstein (approx. 36,000 population). In absolute numbers, there were only 390 secure Internet websites in Gibraltar, in 2010.
Total number of secure servers
If we instead look at the total number of secure Internet websites per country in 2010, it produces a very different picture. Here’s the top 10 list:
- 446,992 – United States
- 86,878 – United Kingdom
- 82,823 – Japan
- 71,312 – Germany
- 55,739 – South Korea
- 42,258 – Canada
- 39,317 – Australia
- 37,828 – Netherlands
- 19,275 – France
- 14,614 – Switzerland
That’s a lot of secure Internet websites in many of the countries that would probably top the list for most people if they were asked about where such websites could be found.
What about back in 2001?
Just as an interesting comparison, we went back to 2001 to see how it compares to 2010. Gibraltar may be at the top in 2010, but nine years earlier, in 2001, the country was not on the chart. Instead, Liechtenstein was number one, but only with 542 secure servers per 1 million people. That’s quite a difference to over 13,000 servers per 1 million people in Gibraltar in 2010.
Also worth noting is that in 2001, both the USA and Canada made appearances on the top-10 chart, with 274 and 162 secure servers per 1 million people, respectively.
Lots of secure servers
Gilbraltar, with only 390 secure Internet websites in 2010, is a tiny speck on the Internet map, compared to the big nations, like United States. We admit, Gibraltar is not technically a country but a “British overseas territory,” but for the sake of this article we think we can safely include it nonetheless.
Clearly the number of secure Internet websites has increased dramatically over the last ten years, and we can only estimate that the growth since 2010 has been significant as well.
